James Kibby

Biography
James Kibby is a well-known Capetonian guitar legend who has adapted his performance style over the years to become his own one man band, otherwise known as a live loop station guitarist and singer.
Background
In 1985 he joined Basil ‘Manenberg’ Coetzee’s new group Sabenza and started touring, recording (3 albums in all) and performing with them all over SA (Kippies, Jamesons, Rainbow Jazz Club, Grahamstown International Festival of the Arts to name just a few) and internationally (London and all over England and Scotland, Amsterdam, Rome and Geneva).
With Basil’s untimely passing in 1998 he began playing in many smaller jazz and blues outfits, subsequently forming Acid Blues with drummer Richard Pickett and bassist Maurice Paliaga, as well as an original music trio with drummer Carlo Fabe and bassist Peter Ndlala.
Today
During 2022 James began performing as a self contained provider of music for various end of year events, weddings and parties both corporate and private. He provides sound equipment, an extremely entertaining live looping set and can DJ to suit any occasion.

James Kibby's Musical Process - Live Looping
James Kibby utilizes a Boss RC300 looping machine. Nothing is pre-recorded or stored, it has three clean tracks which are synced together.
The first track is used for setting up a groove (guitar, beatboxing, shakers etc.) The second is for backing vocals, chants and any other part of the song that utilises the mic, potentially included the background noise while he is recording. The third track is used for bass, which is either the internal bass on the looper for an electric bass sound or an external octave pedal, for an upright bass sound.
